HLC Self Study
Chapter 3 Graphic

Seventh Opportunity for Improvement

To fulfill the mission of a comprehensive college, more full-time faculty and counselor schedules should include evening assignments.

To best meet the needs of learners, Estrella Mountain’s founding College President arranged to allow a residential faculty member’s teaching load to consist of evening as well as traditional day classes. Unfortunately, there has not been any significant change in the number of residential and One-Year-Only (OYO) faculty teaching in the evening over the last 10 semesters. Given the College’s growth, this means that evening students have less access to residential faculty today than they did 10 years ago. It is the choice of the faculty member whether to teach after 3:55 p.m., as outlined in the Residential Faculty Policy (RFP) manual. Figure 14, illustrates this challenge/reality.

Evening office hours for Counseling faculty were being staffed intermittently prior to the 2002 self-study. As a result of the 2002 self-study, the Counseling Division budgeted for and staffed evening office hours for Counseling faculty from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday. When the hours of operation changed for Student Services due to budget constraints in fall 2009, the Counseling Division reduced its evening office hours to 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, to be consistent with the building hours for Student Services.
