Summary

Estrella Mountain Community College’s recently revised mission, vision and core values not only align with the mission, vision and values of the Maricopa County Community College District, but they reflect an institutional commitment to learning. Diversity is a core component of Estrella Mountain’s core values, demonstrating the College’s commitment to the West Valley community and its various constituencies. The College fulfills its clear and publicly-articulated mission with integrity, collaboration and effective leadership.

The following Strengths, Challenges and Recommendations serve to demonstrate the College’s commitment to operating with integrity to ensure the fulfillment of its mission through structures and processes that involve the Governing Board, administration, faculty, staff, and students.

Strengths

  • Estrella Mountain Community College effectively operates with integrity to ensure the fulfillment of its mission through structures and processes that involve the Governing Board, administration, faculty, staff, and students. 
  • Estrella Mountain developed its mission, vision and core values through a participatory process that included the administration, community, faculty, staff, and students. The mission, vision and core values are publicly stated and remain congruent with the mission of the Maricopa County Community College District.
  • Diversity is a core college value. Estrella Mountain provides a wide variety of resources in support of diversity and inclusivity.
  • As educational programs are developed, the Curriculum Product Development and Academic Issues Team committees ensure that all programs meet the needs of their diverse constituents and regulatory agencies.
  • Estrella Mountain policies and procedures are aligned with District policies and procedures.
  • The College has developed departments and processes to ensure compliance with all laws and regulations.
  • Estrella Mountain adheres to the Maricopa County Community College District’s policies and administrative regulations for student complaints.
  • Institutional planning and budget strategies are developed to support the mission and mission goals.

Challenges

  • The economic downturn has influenced budgeting and subsequent progress of initiatives designed to increase diversity opportunities.
  • The Core Values Diversity Team ceased to function after 2009.

Recommendations

  • Estrella Mountain needs to continue to strengthen its commitment to diversity initiatives, such as the reinstatement of the Diversity Committee.
