Maricopa County Community College District Professional Development

The Maricopa County Community College District supports life-long learning among employees by providing a wide array of professional development opportunities. As a Learning College, Estrella Mountain encourages and supports all faculty, administrators and staff to utilize the many professional development options provided to them as District employees.

The Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction (MCLI) offers opportunities for faculty to develop professionally in the areas of student success, effective teaching pedagogy, technology innovation, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Examples of professional development opportunities include the Kellogg Institute: Training and Certification of Developmental Educators and the workshop Service Learning: Connect, Engage and Transform. Through MCLI, faculty are provided with classroom technology training and introduced to new and innovative classroom approaches, such as Bringing Digital Storytelling to the Classroom. MCLI also provides opportunities for faculty to design, improve, advance, and enrich student learning through District Learning Grants

The Maricopa Institute for Learning (MIL) is a fellowship program through MCLI for full-time faculty in any discipline. Participants develop classroom research projects to investigate student learning and how it can be fostered, tested, documented, and made public. Participants discover ideal student learning conditions, determine their relevancy, research the extent of scholarship about teaching and learning present in a discipline, and determine whether there are implications beyond an individual classroom. The program also creates a community of scholars who engage in conversations about the scholarship of teaching and learning. Eight Estrella Mountain faculty members have participated in the MIL fellowship program since its inception in 1999-2000. Examples of their work include:
