Assessing General Education Abilities

The General Education Abilities Matrix provides evidence of curricular and co-curricular activities supporting inquiry, creativity and social responsibility. As described in detail in Chapter 6: Criterion 3, the matrix is composed of seven specific elements taught across the curriculum and designed to provide students with essential knowledge and skills.

Each of the general education abilities is assessed at different learning levels using Bloom’s Taxonomy of cognitive learning as a guide. The current General Education Mapping Project documents how often and at what level each of these abilities is being taught. In addition, individual and teams of faculty have documented the assessment of curricular and co-curricular activities that support the general education abilities using the SAAC EZ and Team EZ forms. Faculty members have also developed institutional assessment instruments, such as the common writing rubric that is used across the curriculum.
